“So you guys finally have a running-back coach. It’s almost March.”

“Yeah, I know,” Tad told me as we spoke on the phone two weeks later.

We had been inseparable. I was glad that I had friends who understood because I was spending most of my time away from them. They were actually happy for me. Everyone except Cammie. It was as if she’d turned into a whole different person. She left several messages on my machine and several notes on my door. It wasn’t stalking, but it was way too obsessive. Since her messages were bothering me, I had been avoiding her.

I talked to Tad about Cammie and he said, “Just pray for her. Maybe she hasn’t had a close friend and she is bothered by not having you around.”

I told him that I could understand that, but it didn’t make it any easier. However, prayer was a good solution. “So are you sure the coach wants me to go out to dinner with you guys?”

“Yeah. Coach Randolph said he wanted me to meet my new running-back coach. He asked about you and me and I told him we were tight. He wants us to go out with the running-back coach and his wife.”

“Do you think he’ll be boring?”

“I’ve never met a football coach that was boring. I think he may be a Christian. Can you be ready in a couple of hours?”

I asked, “Yeah, but what should I wear?”

“Just wear something nice.”

“You mean casually cute?”

“Just look like you always do,” Tad responded.

I had two hours before my big date. Laurel was in the room and we read Proverbs together. We read up through chapter three. My favorite Scripture was verses five through six, which said, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

“What are you thinking about?” Laurel asked as I stared at the wall.

“Just recalling how awesome God really is. When I got out of the way, He worked things out like they should be. I was not letting Him be Lord. Now I can truly say that He can do it and He does not need my help. How about you? How are things goin’?”

“I’m still dealing with a lot of stuff, but I’m better. I’m heading to the library to study.”

“OK. Is something else at the library besides books?”

“What are you talking about, Payton?”

“You can study anywhere on this campus, and you continue to go to the library. Something is going on.”

“You get dressed for your date. My night’s not going to be nearly as exciting as yours.”

“Well, you better have straight A’s this semester.”

“You study a lot, too.”

“Yeah, but I do it here, on the Internet.”

“I use the Internet, too. Only I use it in the nice, quiet environment of the library.”

“Whatever.”
